Hey, Mark Manson here. Back with a story and an exercise you can try to further develop your ability to be disliked. Every Monday, alongside my harsh truths and reflection questions, I ask over one million readers to try one thing in their lives and write back to let me know what breakthroughs they achieve as a result. I then share a couple of these reader breakthroughs with the rest of my community to inspire them into action. And, over a hundred newsletters later, these “Last week’s breakthroughs” have become the aspect readers love most. For Vanessa, one of our readers, her response to my prompt about being disliked showed just how much a tiny breakthrough can have a meaningful impact. “I am a 37-year-old female who recently split from my husband. I had been disengaged in our marriage for some time and knew it wasn't the right relationship. I know I should have left sooner—finances, elderly and unwell pets and a very real fear of his emotional response kept me there. When I was speaking to a close friend about ‘how’ you leave a relationship when you have history and entwined finances, their very basic and honest response of ‘you just leave’ is what finally made it click—ridiculous, I know. This week's suggestion of being willing to be disliked has reminded me how pleased I am to have made the decision at last, and that despite some people hating me for it, I made the right choice for me and I believe for both of us long term. Things are still very ‘messy’ but the sense of freedom and strength in myself is immense.” Vanessa’s story is just one of a hundred I received when I asked my readers to: Lean into the willingness to be disliked for something. Notice the freedom it gives you. Your mission today, should you choose to accept it, is to lean into the willingness to be disliked for something. Then reply to share your breakthrough with me. Consider it a test run. And remember, if you don’t want one idea, one question, and one exercise each week that might change your life, you can click to unsubscribe here. Until tomorrow, Mark Manson
